Mom’s Dream Salad: A Vintage Lime Jello Recipe

I came across Mom’s Dream Salad recipe recently and made it for my brother.  He hadn’t had it in years and was so delighted.  It was one of those recipes that defined summer back in the 70’s.  I remember my mom often converting it into a Weight Watcher’s recipe by using low-fat cottage cheese and sugar free lime Jello, and it became the perfect sweet treat without the added fat and sugar.

It’s one of those old-fashioned dishes that might seem simple by today’s standards — but every spoonful brings back memories of childhood.

What is Dream Salad?

Dream Salad is a creamy Jello dish that was a staple at potlucks and holiday tables back in the 60s and 70s.  It’s made with just a few ingredients:  Jello, cottage cheese, crushed pineapple, and whipped topping.

The texture is light and fluffy, with a sweet-tart kick from the lime and pineapple that balances perfectly with the creamy cottage cheese.  It’s refreshing, nostalgic, and totally irresistible.

Why is it called a salad?  I had no idea so I referred to my friend ChatGPT.  Apparently, back in the 50’s Jello marketed molded dishes with suspended ingredients like fruit, pineapple or cottage cheese as salad.  It must have stuck!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 (3 oz) package Lime Jello (or flavor of your choice)
  • 1 (16 oz) container of cottage cheese
  • 2 cups crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1 cup whipped topping (like Cool Whip)

How to Make Mom’s Dream Salad

  • In a medium size bowl, combine cottage cheese and pineapple
  • Fold in the Cool Whip
  • Sprinkle the dry Jello mix on top of all combined ingredients
  • Mix thoroughly until Jello is dissolved
  • Refrigerate for 4-6 hours, or overnight
  • Serve and enjoy!

Why I Still Love This Vintage Recipe

Maybe it’s because it reminds me of Mom, but also there’s something comforting about keeping these retro recipes alive.  I recently found my aunt’s green chili recipe that I thought was gone forever and was overjoyed when I found it tucked inside an old cookbook.

Dream Salad might not be the trendiest dessert on Pinterest, but it’s a crowd-pleaser every time.  It’s sweet, nostalgic, and perfect for family gatherings, holidays, or anytime you need a quick, no-bake treat.

Tips and Variations

  • Try substituting cherry, raspberry or orange Jello for a fun twist.
  • For extra flavor and texture, mix in a handful of chopped pecans or walnuts.
  • You can also serve it in a graham cracker crust as a light, chilled pie.
  • It’s fun to serve a recipe like this in a decorative bowl.  I have these nesting bowls with lids that I got from Amazon and I love them!
