Hello from the Arizona desert — I’m Susan, the creator behind The Tinkering Spinster.
I grew up in Phoenix in a big, loud military family — six kids total, very Brady Bunch. I’m the middle girl (yes, very “Jan”), which probably explains my personality.
The name The Tinkering Spinster started as a family joke. When my Aunt Dollie was 93, she announced she was surprised I was “the spinster” of the family. I was 23 at the time! Fast forward 30+ years… and here we are. Turns out she may have been onto something.
I’ve been tinkering my entire life. When I see something I want to make, it becomes an obsession. I dive in, gather the supplies, test the process, refine it, and figure out how to make it better. Sometimes that means baking in the kitchen. Sometimes it means crafting, decorating, or tackling a DIY project. I rarely have just one thing going at a time — creativity doesn’t work that way for me.
Today, TheTinkeringSpinster.com is where I share recipe, decorating and hands-on projects that are doable, practical, and actually worth making again. My background as a former craft store owner — where teaching classes was my favorite part — shaped how I create and share. I love breaking things down so you can confidently recreate them in your own kitchen or home.
You’ll find everything from seasonal baking to creative spins on classic recipes, along with room remodels and DIY projects that catch my attention. If I’m making it, I’m sharing it.
